Most Ethernet cables used for connection in office and home environments rely on twisted pair in the overall cable - this format is used by cat 5E cable, Cat 6 cable and cat 7 cable. The wires are twisted together to balance the current, that is, in one wire, the current moves in one direction, while in the other wire of the pair, the current flows to the other, so that the whole field around the twisted pair can be offset.


In this way, data can be transmitted to a considerable length without taking improper precautions.


Since a particular network cable contains multiple pairs of twisted pairs, the number of twisted pairs per unit length of each pair of twisted pairs is different - the rate is based on prime, so there will be no alignment of two twisted pairs. This reduces crosstalk in the cable.


Ethernet cables have jumper cables of various lengths, or the cable itself can be used for integration into systems, buildings, etc. The termination can then be connected to the desired connector using a crimp tool. These network cables are available in a variety of lengths - long Ethernet cables are available, some of which can be up to 75 meters long.


Early cables were unshielded, but later cables were shielded to improve performance. For example, an unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable may be suitable for short-distance operation between a computer and a router, but a foil shielded cable FTP is best for long-distance operation or when the cable passes through an area of high electrical noise.
