What is the difference between Thhn and PV wire?

THHN and PV wire are two different types of electrical wires that are used for different purposes and in different applications.

THHN wire is a type of single-conductor wire that is commonly used in commercial and industrial applications, such as in conduit wiring, motor control circuits, and power distribution systems. It is made with a thermoplastic insulation and a nylon jacket that is resistant to heat, oil, chemicals, and abrasion.

PV wire, on the other hand, is a type of single-conductor wire that is specifically designed for use in solar power systems. It is made with a special insulation that is resistant to sunlight, moisture, and extreme temperatures, and is typically used for connecting solar panels and other components of a solar power system.

One of the main differences between THHN and PV wire is their insulation. While THHN wire is designed for general-purpose applications, PV wire is specifically designed for use in solar power systems and is optimized for the unique demands of these systems. PV wire is also typically rated for a higher voltage than THHN wire, as solar power systems often operate at higher voltages.

Another difference between THHN and PV wire is their color coding. THHN wire is typically available in a range of different colors, while PV wire is typically only available in one or two colors. This is because the color coding of PV wire is standardized to indicate the voltage and polarity of the wire in a solar power system.

What type of electrical cable is used for underground?

When it comes to underground electrical wiring, there are several types of cables that can be used. The most commonly used types of cables for underground electrical wiring are:

Underground feeder (UF) cable: UF cable is a type of multi-conductor cable that is commonly used for outdoor and underground wiring. It has a moisture-resistant jacket that makes it suitable for direct burial, and is typically used for powering outdoor lighting, pumps, and other outdoor equipment.

Direct burial cable: Direct burial cable is a type of single-conductor cable that is designed for direct burial in the ground. It has a tough, durable jacket that is resistant to moisture, chemicals, and abrasion, and is typically used for running power to outdoor structures such as sheds and garages.

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) conduit: HDPE conduit is a type of non-metallic conduit that is commonly used for underground electrical wiring. It is flexible, durable, and resistant to corrosion, and is typically used for protecting and organizing electrical cables and wires.

PVC conduit: PVC conduit is a type of plastic conduit that is commonly used for underground electrical wiring. It is rigid and durable, and is typically used for protecting and organizing electrical cables and wires.

What does THHN mean?

THHN is a code for thermoplastic insulated wires and cables:

T - Thermoplastic

H - Heat Resistant

H - Heat Resistant

N - Nylon polyester outer sheath

This wire/cable uses thermoplastic PVC as the insulation material, which can withstand high temperatures. At the same time, the outer layer is wrapped with a nylon polyester braided sheath to improve mechanical strength and wear resistance. THHN wires are widely used in factories, processing workshops, outdoor facilities and other places with high environmental requirements for wires.

What type of conductors does THHN have?

THHN wires usually use the following conductor materials:

Copper conductor
This is the most common conductor material for THHN wires. Copper conductors have good electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance.
Aluminum conductor
Lighter and more economical than copper conductors, but slightly less conductive, often used for cables with large cross-sectional areas.
Copper-Clad aluminum conductor
A thin layer of copper is wrapped around the aluminum conductor, combining the economy of aluminum with the conductivity of copper.
Steel-core aluminum conductor
The middle is a steel core with an aluminum layer wrapped around it. It is mainly used for cables with large cross-sections to improve mechanical strength.
No matter what kind of conductor material, THHN wire conductors are made of tightly twisted multi-strand structure, which improves flexibility and vibration resistance. According to the needs of different applications, you can choose the appropriate conductor material and specifications.

Where is THHN wire used?

THHN wires are widely used in various indoor and outdoor environments, especially those occasions with high requirements for wires:

Industrial facilities
Including factories, processing workshops, docks, etc., THHN wires can withstand harsh environments such as high temperature, humidity, vibration, etc.
Commercial buildings
For wiring in commercial buildings such as office buildings and shopping centers, the flame retardancy and heat resistance of THHN wires are safer and more reliable.
Outdoor facilities
Due to the protection of the nylon outer sheath, THHN wires are suitable for some outdoor power facilities, public facilities and other occasions.
Machine tools
THHN wires meet UL machine tool wire safety standards and can be used for electrical connections of various processing machine tools in factories.
Other special environments
For industrial environments such as tunnels, mines, smelters, etc. that have harsh requirements for wires, THHN wires are ideal.

What are the alternatives to THHN wire?

Similar wires and cables to THHN include THWN, thermoplastic, heat- and water-resistant wire (THHW), and thermoplastic flexible fixture nylon (TFFN):

THWN Wire:
THWN jacket that's suitable for use in dry (90ºC) and wet applications up to a maximum temperature of 75ºC. This wire has PVC insulation and a nylon jacket. Most THHN wires have a dual THHN/THWN rating.

THWN-2 Wire:
Similar to THWN wire but rated for a maximum operating temperature of 90ºC in wet conditions.

THHW Wire:
THHW without a nylon jacket. It's suitable for dry use to a maximum temperature of 90ºC and wet applications to a maximum of 75ºC.

TFFN Wire:
TFFN wire for use in buildings. The wire is very flexible, has a nylon jacket, and is available in smaller gauges including 16 and 18 AWG.
